The G20 Climate and Sustainability Working Group Science-Policy Workshop Opens in Cape Town
The G20 Climate and Sustainability Working Group (ECSWG) Science-Policy Workshop took place in Cape Town from 10 September to 12 September.
Day 1 opened with a scene-setting overview delivered by the ECSWG Chairperson, Mr. Maesela Kekana. This was followed by a high-level panel discussion on Just Transitions in energy and social systems.
The Mpumalanga Green Cluster Agency (MGCA) actively participated in the workshop, represented by Acting CEO Mr. Nkosinathi Nkonyane, who contributed to the panel discussion on Just Transitions in energy and social systems. MGCA’s involvement highlights the province’s growing role in navigating the shift from coal-dependent energy systems toward more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient development pathways. By engaging at the G20 platform, MGCA brought provincial perspectives and practical insights from Mpumalanga (South Africa’s energy heartland) into the global dialogue on climate and sustainability.
The panel featured:
- Nkosinathi Nkonyane, Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mpumalanga Green Cluster Agency
- Lauren Hermanus, Director, Southern Transitions
- Olufunso Somorin, Regional Principal Officer, Climate Change and Green Growth Programme, African Development Bank
- Lenore Cairncross, Development Finance Expert
- Vitoria Gonzales, Project Coordinator, Plataforma CIPO (Brazil)
The discussion was facilitated by Mr. Anthony Dane, Director at Southern Transitions.
