The Mpumalanga Green Cluster Agency (MGCA) proudly partnered and participated in the Fostering Green Business Growth training hosted by the International Training Centre of the ILO in Mbombela from 17–19 November at the Capital Hotel. This three-day programme brought together stakeholders to explore practical strategies for building sustainable enterprises and strengthening the province’s green economy.
Day One: Understanding Global Challenges and Local Opportunities
The opening session focused on global environmental challenges and the importance of creating a conducive business environment for green growth. Participants discussed how innovative businesses can serve as tools for change—addressing both societal and environmental issues simultaneously.
Later, the spotlight shifted to green business opportunities in Mpumalanga Province, highlighting the potential for MSMEs to drive local action. With the right knowledge and support, small enterprises can become catalysts for sustainable development, creating jobs while reducing environmental impact.
Day Two: Tools for Green Business
Day two introduced participants to practical tools and methods that help businesses measure, manage, and reduce their environmental footprint.
Key Tools Highlighted
- Carbon Accounting Software
Tracks energy consumption, waste, and emissions to help companies measure and reduce their carbon footprint.
Example: Platforms like Sphera or Carbon Trust tools provide detailed reporting and actionable insights. - Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Tools
Evaluate the environmental impact of products and services across their entire lifecycle—from raw materials to disposal.
Example: OpenLCA helps businesses identify hotspots and design more sustainable products. - Environmental Management Systems (EMS)
Frameworks such as ISO 14001 guide organizations in setting sustainability goals, monitoring progress, and ensuring compliance. - Waste Reduction Programs
Encourage reuse, recycling, and take-back initiatives to minimize waste.
Example: Circular economy platforms like Loop enable businesses to adopt reusable packaging models.
These tools empower businesses to integrate sustainability into both operations and strategy, ensuring that environmental responsibility becomes part of everyday decision-making.
Day Three: Finance and Policy for Green Growth
The final day explored the sustainable finance landscape, effective policy interventions, and the structuring of green business services. Access to finance and supportive policies are critical for MSMEs to scale their green innovations and contribute meaningfully to the Just Energy Transition.
Why This Training Matters
This training underscored the importance of MSME growth in Mpumalanga as a driver of social and economic resilience. By equipping entrepreneurs with the right tools and knowledge, communities gain a stronger chance to build their own sustainable economy—one that balances environmental stewardship with inclusive development.
