Seriti Green Hands Over Vunumoya Main Transmission Station to Eskom, Unlocking Major Renewable Energy Capacity in Mpumalanga

Bethal, Mpumalanga — 26 November 2025:

In a major milestone for South Africa’s energy transition, Seriti Green, in partnership with Eskom and the National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA), officially handed over the Vunumoya Main Transmission Station (MTS) last week. Delivered in just 18 months, the more than R1-billion investment now stands as a fully energised, grid-integrated asset that will unlock one of the country’s most ambitious renewable energy programmes.

The energisation of the MTS enables the first 155MW of wind power from Ummbila Emoyeni One to flow into the national grid ahead of schedule, marking the start of a 900MW renewable rollout that will progressively provide clean, reliable power to the country.

Partnership Driving Real Progress

At the ceremony, Seriti Group CEO Mike Teke reflected on the milestone:

“The handover of the Vunumoya Main Transmission Station demonstrates what effective partnership can achieve. This is a meaningful milestone for South Africa’s energy transition and for Mpumalanga’s future as a renewable energy hub.”

The Vunumoya MTS forms a critical anchor in the broader Ummbila Emoyeni Renewable Energy Project, with advanced 400kV and 132kV systems, a 500MVA transformer, and capacity for future expansion.

Eskom: Modernising the Grid for a Sustainable Future

Eskom Group Chief Executive Dan Marokane welcomed the handover:

“This achievement is a demonstration of what collaboration and innovation can deliver. It modernises our grid, strengthens reliability, and supports South Africa’s clean energy trajectory.”

The project, originally scheduled for commissioning in March 2026, was accelerated to allow renewable energy to be wheeled from 28 November 2025, supporting Seriti Resources’ decarbonisation commitments.

NTCSA: Strengthening South Africa’s Transmission Backbone

NTCSA CEO Monde Bala underscored the importance of the project:

“Vunumoya is central to enabling efficient integration of renewable energy into the grid and strengthening system reliability. We appreciate the diligence and partnership shown across all teams involved.”

MGCA: A Turning Point for Mpumalanga’s Green Industrialisation

Nkosinathi Nkonyane, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Mpumalanga Green Cluster Agency (MGCA), emphasised the significance for the province:

“The Vunumoya handover is more than an infrastructure achievement, it is a strong signal that Mpumalanga is fast becoming the centre of South Africa’s green industrial future. Grid-enabling investments like this create the foundation for new industries, new skills pathways, and long term economic diversification. MGCA welcomes this milestone as a model of the partnerships needed to drive a Just Transition that works for people, communities, and businesses in this province.”

Renewable Rollout to Shape Mpumalanga’s Future

Seriti Green CEO Peter Venn added:

“This milestone shows what coordinated delivery can achieve and reinforces Seriti Green’s commitment to delivering clean energy at the scale required for South Africa’s Just Energy Transition.”

With Vunumoya now live, the path is set for a multi-year programme of wind and solar development—positioning Mpumalanga as a future hub for renewable energy, green manufacturing, and low-carbon industrialisation.
