The Mpumalanga Green Cluster Agency (MGCA) successfully facilitated the Mpumalanga Mine Rehabilitated Land and Repurposing Technical Task Team (MMRRTTT) Workshop on 16 April 2026 in Middelburg. The full-day workshop brought together representatives from the public sector, private sector, academia, development finance institutions, and other strategic stakeholders to strengthen collaboration on repurposing and the productive reuse of mine-affected land across Mpumalanga.
The primary objective of the workshop was to create a coordinated multi-stakeholder platform that aligns existing initiatives, reduces duplication of efforts, and accelerates practical projects that contribute to economic diversification, environmental restoration, and inclusive growth. Discussions were centred on current projects on the ground, initiatives at the feasibility stage, policy alignment, investment opportunities, and mechanisms to unlock underutilised rehabilitated land for sustainable development.
The session provided a platform for robust engagements on governance structures, technical coordination, community inclusion, land-use opportunities, and implementation pathways. Through collaborative discussions, participants shared insights, identified challenges, proposed solutions, and reaffirmed the importance of partnership-driven action to ensure long-term impact.
Key outcomes of the MMRRTTT Workshop include the following:
-
- Support for the establishment and operationalisation of a Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) to guide implementation and provide specialist input.
- Consensus on the need for a centralised information hub or repository for available land, ongoing projects, feasibility studies, and investment opportunities.
- Strong emphasis on ensuring local communities benefit directly through jobs, enterprise opportunities, skills development, and inclusive participation.
- Identification of priority sectors for repurposed land, including agriculture, renewable energy, waste management, and other green economy opportunities.
- Commitment to move from planning to implementation-focused action, with stakeholders calling for catalytic pilot projects and continued collaboration.
The successful planning session marks an important milestone in advancing Mpumalanga’s just transition agenda and unlocking the socio-economic potential of rehabilitated mine land. It further reinforces the Mpumalanga Green Cluster Agency’s role as a convener of strategic partnerships that drive sustainable development, investment readiness, and inclusive economic transformation in the province.
